Posting Summary
The Rutgers Pre College Outreach and Upward Bound Math-Science (RUBMS) Programs are funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The programs are designed to assist and motivate students to succeed, graduate from high school, and enroll in institutions of higher education. The Program Mentor position is a hybrid position with daily online and in person responsibilities for the Pre-College Summer Institute. The Program Mentor position is a a three month appointment, May 1st until August 6th and includes hiring, training and Summer Institute.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
Availability for full-time employment for the duration of the Summer Institute. Program Mentors may not be employed by other University Departments during the duration of the Summer Institute.
Must complete the Protection of Minors certificate and complete the background check prior to June 24th. Should you accept the appointment, you will receive follow-up emails to complete the certificate training and background. Please monitor your Scarletmail email frequently.

Overview
Statement
As a Program Mentor for the Summer Institute, you serve as a role model and representative of the Division of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement. As such, you are expected to abide by the following:
At no time use or be in the presence of any illegal drugs or non-prescribed medication.
? Not consume alcoholic beverages with, be in the presence of, or provide alcohol to an underage person or in any summer program buildings.
? Not consume alcoholic beverages if you are underage, whether off campus or on.
? Not promote off campus events where alcohol is being consumed.
? Adhere to all university, program, and DICE policies
* Average duty should not exceed 30-40 hours per week.
Specific Duties Include:

Scholar Relationships
-
Build meaningful relationships with scholars in your mentor group(s)
-Actively build relationships with other scholars in the program
- Assist scholars in their personal and collegiate development
- Serve as a resource for general questions and concerns
- Be available, visible, and accessible to scholars
Program Mentor Expectations:
- Facilitating and moderating weekly programming; Ex. Social/Cultural Workshops
- Host/ cohost mentor club(s) meetings
- All programming will be created prior to the start of the Summer Institute, and must be approved by the professional staff
-Scholar sessions should be fun, engaging, and informative. The goal of Program Mentor is to further promote growth and development within the scholars, help them feel comfortable and safe in the program, campus environment, and promote a sense of community among their fellow scholars
- Daily check-in with assigned mentor group
Tutoring, Academic Coaching, and Community Building Expectations

Facilitate Weekly Tutoring
- Summer Institute tutoring subjects may include- High School Math, Science, Language Arts, and SAT Preparations
Programming and Community Building
Connect scholars to one another to build community
Develop, plan and implement weekly programming as assigned. Develop individual communities that encourage academic and personal growth
- Promote inclusive communities (including special interest communities if applicable) that encourage acceptance and understanding
- Encourage dialogue amongst scholars to establish clear and feasible living expectations and support healthy relationships. Engage scholars in proactive discussions about living independently
-Collaborate with all Program Mentors for programming and meetings
- Encourage acceptance and promote inclusive communities
- Develop communities focused on learning and the academic success of each scholar
- Encourage scholars to participate in program planning and implementation
- Educate scholars about campus/residential college identity
? Encourage scholars to respect and maintain the university property
Administration

- Attend all staff meetings, or any additional meetings as assigned by supervisor
- Attend weekly staff training/ professional developments
-Maintain constant and positive working relationships with program professional staff, faculty university departments and offices, parents, family members, and program participants
- Work cooperatively with fellow staff members to create a positive presence environment
- Maintain a community bulletin board with pertinent university and community information
- Complete specified reports and paperwork in a timely manner
-Consistently check and maintain email
Other Duties
- Understand and uphold all university and Division Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement (DICE), regulations, and policies. Develop working knowledge of all crisis related protocols and resources
- Responds to first level crisis regarding students in the program. Respond to crisis situations as they occur, providing ample support and follow-up as needed
- Create an atmosphere where scholars understand and respect the rights of others
? Empower and educate students to resolve and mediate conflicts on their own
? Mediate conflicts as needed. Notify appropriate supervisor(s) immediately of any conflicts that may escalate
-Supervises all scholars in transit to programs, class, events, and buildings on and off campus
- Assist with identification of parents, students, and guardians for pick up or drop off students
- Serve as a chaperone for minors at all times including trips and special events
- Address and report facility issues as they arise. Support and work cooperatively with the maintenance staff. Address all policy violations consistently
-Document situations, and submit reports in a timely manner. Report all scholar concerns and/or policy violations immediately to the Upward Bound staff
-Submit all necessary student logs, incident reports, student information, and program documents on time as determined by your supervisor
- Sit at welcome desk, signing in guests, check identification and manage guest registration book when assigned
- Assist in conducting rounds in areas where students are present such as classrooms, student centers, computers labs, recreation facilities and campus grounds
- Use an educational and creative approach to address policies with students as well as the impacts of their behavior
- Maintain consistency and fairness when dealing with all students in the program
- Other duties assigned.
